Intel Launches Pine Trail Technology for Atom Netbooks @ legitreviews.com
[Dec-21-09] (0 Comments)

The Intel Pine Trail platform looks fairly solid with the exception of HD video playback. With HD video content clearly being the direction that the market is headed it would be nice to be able to playback HD content right our of the box with no issues moving into 2010. Not having native hardware H.264 or VC-1 decoding is a disappointment, but at least the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 3150 has hardware acceleration for MPEG-2. The NVIDIA Ion platform can do it and the upcoming Ion 2 platform will continue to give the NVIDIA Ion chipset a reason to be bought since the Intel Atom platform suffers on HD video decode performance. The nice thing about Pine Trail is that the two chip design will open up more space for third-party HD video decoders, which is key to the advancement of netbooks in general...

Sapphire Radeon HD 5850 - XSs @ xsreviews.co.uk
[Nov-20-09] (0 Comments)

Thegraphics solution world is constantly evolving with visual qualitybeing stepped up at an ever-growing exponential rate. The launch ofWindows 7 and with it the tantalising prospect of DirectX 11 games isperhaps not so much just a single step up but a whole flight of stairsdesigned to deliver unparalleled graphics quality. With nVidia sliding by the way side, ATI is setting about monopolisingthe market rolling out numerous members of its 5 series cards, each ofwhich offers a different price/performance ratio, following the mainlaunch of the 5870 – a card which packed some serious performance andcertainly turned heads at the beginning of the DirectX 11 era. However, with DirectX 11 games still very much on the horizon and priceof the 5870 way over budget for many enthusiasts, the inevitableintroduction of the 5850 followed shortly. Based on the same RV870core, codenamed Cypress, but located inside the $250 price bracket, the5850 should consolidate the performance achieved by its bigger brotherplacing it in the upper mid-range section so as to push all the buttonsfor DX11 enthusiasts.

Patch Re-enables PhysX When ATI Card is Present @ ngohq.com
[Oct-04-09] (0 Comments)

As you may or may not know, Windows 7 allows twodisplay drivers to be used at once – like in Windows XP. Therefore, itis possible to use an Nvidia card for PhysX and ATI card for graphicsrendering. Sadly, since the release of 186 graphics drivers, Nvidia hasdecided to block this feature anytime a Non-Nvidia GPU is present inthe system. In addition, for some incomprehensible reasons, the latestversion of PhysX System Software also prevents PPU cards from workingif a Non-Nvidia GPU is present. As expected, this move by Nvidia generated a lot of criticism from bothconsumers and even Nvidia’s competitors. Luckily, a forum member by thename of GenL has released an experimental beta patch which interceptsdisable-PhysX-if-Radeon-is-present-code. So far, according to usercomments the patch delivers successful results. At this stage, thepatch only works for PhysX GPU rendering and not PPU rendering. However, the developer claims that work is still in progress.

QNAP TS-239 Pro Turbo NAS @ pcreview.co.uk
[Aug-14-09] (0 Comments)

The QNAP TS-239 Pro is a next generation model based on the Intel Atom platform which includes even more features suited to an office environment (such as iSCSI). This NAS includes two drive bays (providing up to 4TB storage) and the unit size has been reduced substantially to a mere 214x175x115mm.This little NAS includes a 1.6Ghz atom CPU, 1GB DDRII memory and two gigabit LAN ports – which is much more powerful than many competing devices. Not only does this improve the performance of some elements (such as the PHP/MySQL server), but it ensures that a larger number of clients can use the NAS without performance degradation. Similar to other QNAP variants there are 12 primary functions which the NAS unit can perform.

You've read our squawks about the endlesssearch for the perfect two-in-one imagingdevice (good pictures and videos in a singlepackage). For the most part we'veconcentrated on camcorders since they startout with fine video. Unfortunately other thana few Canons we've been generallydisappointed with these supposed hybridssince they really can't grab quality stillimages. Panasonic is flipping this formula onits head, starting off with a solid cameraand adding high-quality movies to the mix. Inthis instance, the Lumix DMC-ZS3 is the firstdigicam with AVCHD Lite, a lesser qualitycodec compared to the AVCHD used in mosthigh-def camcorders. Rather than 1080I, Literecords 720P at 60 frames per second, whichin theory should be far better than 1280 x720 30 fps clips taken by many 2009 cameras. In fact we just reviewed the Canon PowerShotSD970 IS with this feature and weren't toothrilled with the video results. Now willAVCHD Lite be a heavyweight or a bust? Timeto check it out.

Kaspersky Internet Security 2009 @ pcreview.co.uk
[Apr-07-09] (0 Comments)

The most important component of KIS 2009 is undoubtedly the anti-virus scanner, which is the backbone of protection for any computer. Some of the most comprehensive AV testing is done by a company called AV-Comparatives, which test a variety of scanners against a huge database of viral infections. This is one of the most effective ways of measuring the performance of AV scanners, and provides a much more representative result than personal testing. In the latest test of on-demand AV scanners (Feb 09), Kaspersky is tested alongside 16 other products in their default modes. A 97.1 overall detection rate was achieved, which is roughly a mid-table result – however the number of false positives was significantly lower than many other scanners.

[News] Kingwin Big Drive RAID Enclosure @ virtual-hideout.net
[Jan-22-09] (0 Comments)

Let's be honest, this is a very cheap product, right on the verybottom end of any competing products. It looks good on the outside, but it'svery basic inside. The manual does a great job of explaining the differentRAID levels, but that's about it. The codes that it describes for the frontLED's are nigh indecipherable. That said, being so cheap makes it reallyattractive to a lot of people, and without any performance or setupproblems, I can't see any real reason *not* to get it. As long as youunderstand you aren't getting the easiest to use, or most feature richenclosure.

Battle of GPU Transcoders:ATI Avivo Converter and NVIDIA Badaboom @ pcper.com
[Dec-06-08] (0 Comments)

This first test takes a 1080p Blu-ray HD trailer, already in H.264format, and converts it to the 480x320 resolution of the iPod touch at 780kbps. The CPU-based Xilisoft Converter took 72 seconds to complete theoperation while the GPU-based applications pulled in MUCH better times:23seconds for NVIDIA's Badaboom and 12 seconds for ATI's Avivo Converter. While both GPUs performed well, the ATI application is nearly twice as fastas NVIDIA's program and is 6x faster than the CPU-based encoding process.NVIDIA's Badaboom is 3.1x faster than the CPU encode - still veryimpressive.

How To Play Movies on the BlackBerry Bold Using Badaboom @ legitreviews.com
[Nov-14-08] (0 Comments)

The Badaboom Media Converter was amazing to use and the fact that it completely transcodes a DVD using a bit rate of 2500kbit at a resolution of 480x320 in under 16 minutes was amazing. Two years ago it took me 3-4 hours to transcode a DVD using a bit rate of 237kbps and a resolution of 320x240! The performance gains that can be had with stream computing are obvious and I'm a big fan of using the GPU to complete tasks like transcoding. If you have an NVIDIA graphics cards that supports CUDA then this is something you have to try out to believe it...

NVIDIA's GeForce 9400/9300 Chipset :IGP for Intel @ pcper.com
[Oct-16-08] (0 Comments)

The introduction of the most recent NVIDIA chipset with integratedgraphics for the Intel platform has been expected for quite some time. Codenamed the MCP7A, news of the chipset goes back to the middle of 2007 when weactually thought we would see it before the end of that year. Obviouslysome delays happened, either on the technical or legal side of things, andthe product was delayed long enough for us to be writing about it officiallyfor the first time in October of 2008. In fact, it is that delay thatactually gave AMD's 780G chipset the IGP edge; but that isn't exactlyrelevant while we are talking about Intel-based platforms today.

HighPoint RocketRAID 2640X4 PCI-E SAS Controller @ tweaktown.com
[Oct-04-08] (0 Comments)

How SAS works is very similar to SATA; it uses the same seven wires to connect the drive to the host controller. However, instead of sending ATA packets, SCSI data bits are sent along the controller cable to the controller which then decodes them. This means that the drive has no interface chip; similar to parallel SCSI; its all handled on the controller card itself. Today we have HighPoints Value series SAS controller card, aimed at the mid-range workstation or desktop with high data demands. The RocketRAID 2640X4 today makes its appearance here at TweakTown.

Code of Honor 2:Conspiracy Island @ bit-tech.net
[Aug-14-08] (0 Comments)

The real problem with Code of Honor 2 isn’t the bad graphics, though those are the first thing anyone will notice. Poor graphics wecan cope with. Not every game has to have huge polygon counts and ProcedurallyGenerated Dynamic Mega-texture-awesomeness – but good games do have tohave something. They have to have a hook that can draw people in and makethem want to play more. Code of Honor 2 doesn’t have that.Utterly boring and bland and far too easy in the singleplayer game, aquarter-baked and shallow experience on the multiplayer side, Code of Honor doesn’t really do anything right and is doomed to soonreside in the bargain bin. There are two type of games to find in bargain bins though. There areold or unappreciated games that are still very much worth playing andthen there’s stuff that just couldn’t survive in a capitalist marketdue to a stunning lack of worth. If you’ve read the review this far andstill can't figure out which one we think Code of Honor 2 is then this is probably the game for you.

I had the opportunity to spend some time testing and evaluating this motherboard with two sets of CPUs and two types of memory. First using two X5482 Harpertowns (3200/12mb/1600) and 4x2 gig of Transcend DDR2-800 FB-Dimms, and later on using two E5450 Harpertowns(3000/12mb/1333).This EATX board is built using the newest 5400 Seaburg chipset with 1600FSB support built in. The layout is a typical EATX 12x13” design and like previous versions uses 24, 8 and 4 pin connections to the motherboard. With this new series, a 4 pin Molex connector is added to the board for users with higher power needs. There are 8 Dimm slots for quad channel memory support (up to and including DDR2-800 FB-Dimms) for a maximum of 64 gigs. The board comes boxed with 6 SATA cables, I/O shield, IDE cable, and an excellent manual and Cd with all needed software and drivers.

Many small businesses and advanced home users will use some form of external storage device to backup data or store common files across a network. One of the most convenient methods of doing this is to use a NAS (Network Attached Storage) device, which allows you to access network shares from all other PCs connected to the same network. The QNAP TS-209 Pro II provides space for two SATA hard drives, providing ample storage capacity (for example, 2 x 1TB drives). However this NAS unit isn’t quite as simple as just providing access to storage space, it can do a whole lot more.

During the benchmark install, a runtime library is updated to allow thetest to run on the GPU and then during the test, it addresses the benchmarkDLLs to the GPU instead of the PPU or CPU. Nothing within the benchmark ischanged at all. No software libraries or even a line of code changes in thebenchmark whatsoever. The only thing that changes is that installer, nothingelse. It has been said that the tests results look different on the screenwhen running with PhysX enabled on the GPU. And of course this is true, just as the screen results look different when you test on a dual-core CPUversus a quad-core. This isn't a graphics test; it's a physics test.3DMark Vantage specifically scales more complexity into a scene to takeadvantage of additional physics compute resources, which of course is why itlooks so different/better on a test run with PhysX processing on our GPUs.This is by design in the benchmark and if the folks accusing us took thetime to run it, they would know that.

Ray Tracing in Games:A Story from The Other Side @ pcper.com
[Jun-24-08] (0 Comments)

In contrast to the designers, for the programmers using a ray tracerseemed to make life easier. The most striking difference between a raytracer and a rasterizer is that there are so few special cases. The sameengine renders a 1M scene, including exteriors, for Outbound, and low-polyindoor scenery for Let there be Light. There is no code to limit visibility. All supported features work together effortlessly. And, programmers foundthemselves using rays for everything:testing particle and flare visibility, collision detection, object picking, and so on.

Intel believes that video encoding belongs on the @ bit-tech.net
[Jun-10-08] (0 Comments)

“When you’re encoding on the CPU, the quality will behigher becausewe’re determining which parts of the scene need higher bit-ratesapplying to them,” said François Piednoel, senior performance analystat Intel.Piednoel claimed that the CUDA video encoder will likely deliver poorquality video encodes because it uses a brute force method of splittingthe scene up and treating each pixel the same. It’s interesting thatIntel is taking this route, because one thing Nvidia hasn’treally talked about so far is video quality.“The science of video encoding is about making smarter use of thebits and not brute force,” added Piednoel.I asked Piednoel what will happen when Larrabee turns up because thatis, after all, a massively parallel processor. I thought it’d beinteresting to see if Intel would change its tune in the future once ithad something that had the raw processing power to deliver similarapplication performance to what is being claimed with CUDA. Intel saidthat comparing this to a GPU is impossible, because the GPU doesn’thave full x86 cores. With CUDA, you can only code programs in C andC++, while x86 allows the developer to choose whatever programminglanguage they prefer – that’s obviously a massive boon to anyone thatdoesn’t code in C.

In our line of thinking we often consider the CPU the core of theplatform, but that is beginning to change. In the Tegra line the CPU actsas the conductor of the platform, but most of the performance features thatNVIDIA is pushing are actually accelerated by the graphics portion of theplatform. Consider how video decode and encode has gone from the CPU to theGPU in the past several years. This is merely an extension of that overalltrend, but trimmed down to the very basics.

Make It Again, Man @ bit-tech.net
[Mar-11-08] (0 Comments)

It all comes down to that age old nightmare game design. AsI've said before, design is hard its certainly the hardest thing about making good games. As an indiedeveloper, I get to do all the jobs, and the design bit is the one Ifind hardest of all, although ironically it's the bit I get praised forin reviews. I'd like to put forward the theory that the difficulty ofdesign is a reason we should love sequels. Let me explain...I worked for three years on Lionheads The Movies and Iended up being known as the AI coder even though I actually worked onlots of different parts of the game. Because I was involved more orless from the start of the project I saw the game design evolve overtime, which it did rather dramatically. If you haven't seen The Movies, let me describe it briefly. TheMoviesis a management game where you run a movie studio, with a 3D view ofyour studio lot. You pick the actors, sets, costumes, and (and this wasthe cool bit), you actually got to see the finished movie that youmade, with the option to add subtitles, sound effects and so on.Commercially, The Movies did alright, but notbreathtakingly. I left Lionhead just as it was released so I don't knowthe exact figures, but I know there won't be a sequel. There was anexpansion, but the first add-on pack for a game is always indevelopment before it ships that's just the logistics of things. Thegame got some good reviews, but it didn't set the world on fire. Now if youre an investor, a publisher or a money man then yourimmediate thoughts are these: The game did notprovide as good a return on investment as expected. The game did notsell enough. The last thing wewould do is another game like this.Which makes absolutesense. Why throw good money after bad? Would you fund The Movies 2?

The K-Lite Codec pack is the most popular codec pack available at the moment and works flawlessly on Windows Vista. The main benefit of this package is that you can choose the broad type of pack you wish to install (either Basic, Standard or Full). Most users will want to install the standard package, as this should play almost any video file available. If you find a video format that is not supported, it is easy to re-install the full pack at a later date. The full pack is primarily designed for people that need to encode as well as decode (for example, in a movie making package), so is overkill for the vast majority of users.

Whilst the world is still trying to get their heads round the scale of Google Maps and its desktop client counterpart, Google Earth, the company has expanded its satellite photography fieldtrip into outer space and come up with Google Mars and Google Moon. These apps, you guessed it, use the Google Maps interface to allow users to view the two stellar bodies in all their mapped photographic glory. In addition to the usual features such as zooming, panning and permalinking (creating hyperlinks to current map views), the spaced out versions also include Elevation, Visible and Infrared views, which show the maps shaded and colour-coded by altitude, as a mosaic of standard visible images and from a perspective of the infrared group in the spectrum.

If you haven't gone through it already, you just might. I spent abunch of money on motherboards recently and they all seem to be having the sameproblem. Is it because they just don't make them like they used to? I amreferring to the active cooling on my Northbridge; the fans keep makingfunny noises then crapping out. It drives me crazy. Usually though, theactive cooling on the Northbridge was always sub par any way; just enough toget by. With all the advancements in mobos, the cooling solutions have been getting more and more important. Sowith two fans going on two different motherboards, what options do we haveleft? Two reliable benchmarks indicate that the transfer rates provided by the MB124E are about half of what a USB 2.0 enclosure was capable of. Despite numerous attempts to improve the results with different conditions, configurations, and all-together different test systems, the results were consistently and unexplainably poor.

Given the no frills appearance of these modules, I had fairly low expectations for overclocking, and pretty much any gain was going to exceed them... Without touching the timings at all, and with only an increase in voltage from 1.80V to 1.85V, this kit was able to climb to DDR2-960 speeds. Although unstable at 1000 MHz, I did get into Windows, and can tell that with a bit of tweaking, and perhaps some more voltage, these modules could handle it. Another thing that might help with overclocking is some sort of cooling. Many may find heatspreaders to be all about presentation, but slapping a set on these memory modules might be worth the money!

These days, memory plays an important role in running today's games and applications. However, some motherboards can be a bottleneck when it comes to high performance memory. Most of the motherboard manufacturers today are drawing voltage from the 3.3v rail to power memory modules. Only one manufacturer is using the 5v rail, which allows the user higher overclocking, and that's DFI. Even with DDR2, the voltage is pretty limited on many motherboards.

To enable this, ATI are releasing a free H.264 software decoder module in association with Cyberlink. This module plugs into Windows Media Center to let you play back content through that application. Because of the immense processing power required by H.264 video decoding, the different X1000 cards are only able to process certain resolutions. The X1300 can handle 480p and 576p content - basically, standard definition. The X1600 can manage 720p, which is the wide standard for high definition, and is what European and American HDTV broadcasts use. X1800 can manage the highest of high-definition, 1080p. ATI stressed to us that this isn't an 'artificial / marketing' limitation - the power is directly proportional to the pixel pipelines in each card.

The case I want to look at today is slightly larger than most of the current HTPC chassis designs, but the advantage to this is that it allows you to use the more commonly and cheaply available micro-ATX motherboard form factor. It also packs a slightly more powerful power supply and has room for plenty of ventilation, something that becomes essential when you want to stack it beneath or on top of other hot components like VCRs or satellite decoders.

How To Create Your Own Computer Games @ thetechzone.com
[Dec-30-04] (0 Comments)

Ive always loved video games, ever since I first played them on a friends computer in the afternoon after elementary school. Theres something almost magical about the fact that we can move images around and interact with virtual worlds, a living fantasy presented for us to interact with however we please. Ive also always wanted to make games myself but, until recently, didnt have the technical knowledge to do so. Now, Im a second year software engineering student, so if I werent able to code a game without too many dramas thered be something drastically wrong. But what about the common person: the person for whom the term memory leak conjures up images of their grandfather, pipeline is where the water flows, and blitting is unheard of? Well, everyone can get in on the game creation process, and you dont even need to learn real programming to do so

Review: VIA Epia MII @ HEXUS.net
[Dec-24-04] (0 Comments)

From our looks at VIA's Mini-ITX systems previously, it stands
out that the biggest leap in progress for the Epia range has been the
increase in clock speeds over time - While the CLE266 north bridge has
always handled DVD/MPEG-2 playback and handled it well, low clock speeds
for the VIA C3 processor hampered DiVX and other MPEG-4 codec playback
in the past. Now the MII sees an Epia system sat at the 1.2GHz mark,
this performance issue has been eased considerably...

Intel's Azalia: High Definition Audio @ Bit Tech
[Dec-06-04] (0 Comments)

The major problem right now is with DVD Audio, the emerging audio standard. Right now though, even if you do get everything together: 8 channel speakers, DVD-Audio disc and a motherboard with a high definition codec, after all this youll still not get full audio bit-rate playback! Why? Because of DRM issues...

Half-Life 2: Performance Testing @ pcperspective.com
[Nov-18-04] (0 Comments)

Also unlike what many may have thought, ATI did NOT run away with the best performance on HL2. The GeForce 6800 series of cards does very well in the HL2 engine and only falls behind on very particular parts of the shader code. I am quite confident that NVIDIA will be addressing these issues now that they have access to the game and we should see even newer drivers than the 67.02 improving performance in the short and long term.

How to Manage Your Username and Password The Easy and Secure Way @ The Tech Zone
[Oct-21-04] (0 Comments)

Having been an Internet user for more than 9 years, I have 100's of logins and passwords to keep. I'm paranoid. I'm now even more paranoid after I joined YMMSS because I use online payment systems on weekly basis if not daily.

I used to use Microsoft Excel to manage my usernames, passwords, and other registration information, both online and offline. Excel is not safe because there are programs to crack password protected Excel workbooks and I even cracked the spreadsheet and VBA source code password for one of my old Excel financial models I developed. Today I still use Excel to store some personal information but I only save the Excel file on my another PC that is not connected to Internet.

Breif Look @ SuSE 9.1 Pro (Review) @ ipKonfig
[Jul-19-04] (0 Comments)

In the year 1991 at Helsinki, Finland, Linux Torvalds, a 21 year old, sandy haired youth who liked to play with computers and push the limits of their design, awoke the sleeping penguin that is now known as Linux. SuSE was founded in 1992 and released their first distribution in 1993. Since then, the company has grown and in January of 2004, the Novell corporation of networking fame bought into the company. This marks a major change for the Linux community since Novell can add years of networking experience to the codebase used by developers and strengthen some of the code where needed.

IANAG Reg Backup/Restore Tool @ I Am Not A Geek
[Jul-10-04] (0 Comments)

The most requested feature for our security tweaking app has been a registry backup and restore tool. I've decided to develop this feature as a seperate application for now. We will have quite a few different registry tweaking apps so I decided it would be a good idea to keep the code for doing this in it's own file. Not to mention all of the hardcore tweakers that will continue to tweak by hand will want to use JUST this feature.

Matrix Orbital MX512 4x20 VFD Review @ GruntVillE
[May-08-04] (0 Comments)

The fifteen button overlay is quite a large step up from the previous 7 keyed ones; for those confused few out there counting, yes the Matrix Orbital logo in the top left is a button as well. Although none of these are necessary to make the display function they come in quite handy providing your display is mounted within arms reach. Apart from the obvious pre-coded Winamp and volume control applications these keys can also be custom mapped to your liking. I for one, use them to switch between various informational screens while in games or watching DVD's. All of the custom mapping is easily accomplished via the included LCDC software.

VIA EPIA ME6000 Mini-ITX Motherboard Review @ Tweak News
[Mar-10-04] (0 Comments)

I am quite happy with the Epia ME6000. Certainly, there are a couple things that I would have liked to see done differently. The ability to handle faster DDR would have been nice, not to mention the availability of more USB headers on the motherboard. And were it possible, an AGP slot would propel this motherboard much further for HTPC users. Lastly, the file transfer on this system is quite slow.

However, let's stack that against the boards strong points low power consumption, fanless for ultra-quiet operation, geared toward HTPCs and multimedia users, 6 channel sound, embedded MPEG-2 decoder, DDR support up, and the list goes on.

H5001 Wireless Optical Mouse. @ HardExtreme.org
[Feb-20-04] (0 Comments)

The wireless mouse sold by online retailer IOCombo is a great peripheral to buy when you're in the market to buy a mouse. The mouse is manufactured by Eumax, a very successful company that makes a large range products ranging from keyboards to mp3 players. The wireless mouse is inexpensive and is sold at IOCombo.com only $24.95. I have owned several wired optical mice before but this is the best by far. Your palm will firmly fit around the mouse and is really comfortable when you're using it for a long time. The mouse is smaller than an MS Intellimouse. Use coupon code: 04022004 when ordering the mouse at IOCombo.com to save an additional $5.00!
