FAT32 will work fine in 2k/xp, it's just that NTFS is better, but if you have a reason to use FAT32 such as using linux, it will work just as fine.

wow ! excellent article. very interresting. especially to know that FAT32 could actually go up to 8TB, and the problem is only a waist of FAT. is it always 1/8 ? anyway. I got a problem and I need help. I use both Linux and Window 2000. I usually use FAT32 because Linux does only have read access to NTFS partition. I just bought a 250GB harddrive and successfully created a 250GB FAT32 partition under linux. seems to work fine. but can I use it under Win 2K/XP ? or I need to slice it up in 8 partitions ? thank you.

Thank you, this short article has helped me understand how to partition in FAT systems more than whole chapters in A+ books.

The problem is probably related to drivers or something. Did you try reinstalling them? You might want to register and start a seperate thread on this problem though and hopefully we can help.

Thanks for the article! But, unfortunately it doesn't help me to transfer my digital pictures from smartmedia to harddisk (my computers with 2000 and XP do not recognize the data on the smartmedia...) Greetings, Walter

This article will explain the concept behind clusters, and will go in dept on limitations of FAT12, FAT16 and FAT32 and as well as how FAT wastes space when lot of small files are stored. http://www.iceteks.com/articles/parser.php...rticle=clusters
