| You can get the "free" edition of xp. Just make sure you find a corporate one so you don't get nagged by that activaction stuff. But seriously, you need to upgrade. |

| the error message goes by in less then 1 50th of a second its really hard to see it so pressing the pause key wont even send the command to pause until its already off the screen. i do run scandisk every night on that timer. and i run defragmentor on sunday every week or two, and i run a reg cleaner. i also thought of it being some one in the system from when it was on line. so i got the avg update file and put it on a cdrom and updated that computers avg to the new stuff, so it would not be online and take a chance of getting anything in it. but the new data from the avg program still did not find anything in it. i check the ram and other stuff with a dianogistic program for win98. and nothing is ever found wrong or having trouble. i check the hd's surface from time to time and there is never any bad sectors. this is just one of them strange things that seem to happen, i just can't figure out what the difference is in using the timer to restart the computer or the tower's power button. it don't make sense? unless there is some sort of short in the system? but that would have shown up a long time ago? unless it is not enough power from the ps ? or not enough ground for it? and if i upgrade what do i do with the win3.1 system and the win95 system and this win98 since i might just upgrade to win98se? i guess i could use the winMe system i use for a back up computer? but if i take this winXp from my sister i think i'll be in need of a doctor when she finds out., so the win98se upgrade is the best i can do with out a job. |

| I hardly remember Win98 anymore. Please get a job & get XP--HAHAHAHAHA BUT seriously---When you see the error, hit the pause key & it might stop it from disappearing. Run scandisk & do a virus scan, cus it sounds like you have gremilns. | okay here goes another question even though my last one still has not been answered? win98 set up to work on automatic timers through the task scheduler. every thing is automticly timed. the computer does not go online anymore. no online programs run on it only basic windows system files are running. so there are about 3 or 5 things in the task manager when i look in it. very cut to the bone. the way it works is this. 444 am timer starts a program called DjAmp. it works msagent as radio dj for songs you play. 445 am timer starts media monkey to play songs. 500 am timer starts morning playlist 530 am timer changes to next playlist 800 am timer changes to the third playlist 900 am timer changes to next list 1100 am timer changes to another playlist 100 pm timer changes to sixth playlist 200 pm timer changes to another playlist 450 pm timer closes media monkey 454 pm timer closes djamp 457 pm timer restarts media monkey 500 pm timer changes to single artist list 529 pm timer restarts djamp 530 pm timer changes to last playlist for the day 941 pm timer closes media monkey 942 pm timer closes djamp 943 pm timer restarts computer. 955 pm timer restarts media monkey 1000 pm timer starts night time song list. 100 am timer closes media monkey 110 am timer starts scandisk to check for errors (its win98) 130 am timer starts media monkey and new night song list. 400 am timer closes media monkey 402 am timer restarts the computer. then it sits there with screen saver running until it starts all over again. it does this every day. it works perfect with out errors. until about day 4 or day 8 then when it goes to restart the computer either at night or in the morning. the computer will restart only to the dos screen where it says checking pool dmi info........ successful updating info...................update success then instead of loading windows it just sits there? some times i have seen a message flash under that line that says bad or invalid command in............. but it goes by too fast and i can't read where it is? most the time i don't see a message it just sits on that line until i press the power button on the tower and shut it down. then i reboot it and it will work again for another 4 to 8 days then do the samething.. i went in to the bio's and told it to boot reguardless of any errors but that did not seem to work? what is i know back about 1999 or2000 micorsoft came out with a patch to allow 98 to run longer then 48 hours with out a shutdown or restart. so i got that patch and now this is going on? |
