Trying to read Fred's posts seriously give me a headache.

Torrent downloading is awesome. You can get whole seasons of shows, whole cds, etc. You can't do that with things like Kazaa, you'd have to get each file individually.

On average thats right. It is possible for it to go right up to the 2 Mb but can't see how it can be above 512 total on average.

like wit elite wich iz a free sight and i dont blive it 2 b posible 2 get a better speed i downloaded a complete movie in 20 min my speed waz 450kb.s.
any way they only let u download 2 warez at a time until u inprove ur share ratio and if ur ratio goz 2 low bcause ur not seeding they delete ur free account but if u seed alot they will give u extra privalagez like 5 slotz (meanz u can download 5 warez insted of 2

if a torrent haz no seedz u wont b able 2 download or will have a very slow speed

I've been taking a look at different peer-to-peer clients and stumbled across MUTE.

There are some articles describing it here and here.

It's a truly anonymous peer-to-peer network. Whereas most networks establish direct connections between the sender and reciever (and so allow the RIAA and others to get the IP addresses of people sharing copyrighted material) MUTE routes all file transfers through the nodes of the network.

It's modelled on ants apparently and looks like a rather neat idea. Reminds me a bit of The Freenet Project.

The only downside to anonymity is the drop in download speeds. Still, a faster net connection is cheaper than defending against a lawsuit.

There must be some slack in the system. Perhaps if you can't get any useful data of anyone you still upload what you have to other users. A sort of semi-seeder.

Yeah it's something like that. What I never understood about it though is that files are only being uploaded if those people are downloading. So how do people actually start a new torrent, and the fact that it actually works out good is beyond my knowledge. In normal p2p program you are constantly open to uploads so you'd think file availability would be higher then bittorrent. But really it's not.

Obviously the no tap doesn't effect the rate, just the total you can download at. However, if the above site is the right one then your connection is,

The way bittorrent works is you trade bits of files. You send say 1kb one way and then they send back 1kb to you. As this 1kb is a part of the file you don't already have you slowly build up the complete file. So as you're uploading as much as you're downloading in a stable network your maximum download speed should be 512 kbps minus just a little bit for the bandwidth that is used for organising the connection.

Of course the above isn't strictly true or you would never be able to start the transfer, as you have nothing to trade. There will be times therefore (when communicating with a seed for example) when your download speed could hit the full 2Mbps, minus that little bit for overhead. 2 Mbps though will be the exception and wouldn't be stable.

At least I think this is the way it works, I haven't studied the bittorrent protocol in detail so I could of course be barking up the wrong tree.
