That's quite an interesting page.  I always wondered about unbinding it with tcp/ip would make it saffer if it's public, and that answered it. em320.gif  Unless you also use netbui over the internet, but I don't think it's possible.  It's not really something you "set".  It's for LANs only.

don't know what you mean by not set since netbios over tcp/ip most definately can be set.

http://Cable-DSL.home.att.net/index.htm#CaseB

if you can unbind it from tcp/ip, you can most definately bind it.

although i'm wondering if the guest is having problems with his isp, since there was a nugget in there i overlooked which said some isps may have problems with unbinding netbios over tcp/ip. blink.gif

Weird, I can't see why it would cause a problem though.

Is it possible to activate netbios using command propmt so that it can be accessed over the internet?

huh.gif ohmy.gif

what are you thinking about here with this post?

it is already very troublesom to keep people from getting into the net bios now. mad.gif

to post how to get in to the net bios from the internet in a public message for all to see would be just compounding the trouble in making a firewall,

it sounds like your asking for a hack code to be posted. sad.gif

I think he means to access it from his own network. Not hacking into someone elses. smile.gif

Netbios can be very well used and secure, it just required common sense, such as not letting it open to public. It takes about 1 minute to crack a 8 char password, so even password protected ones don't do too well, it's best to always have it behind a router.

I'm trying to get this linux router to work so I can have dual routers, but by the way it's going, I'll end up using windows 98 and download a 3rd party application, and install a firewall. Stupid isa network cards are a pain to get detected in Linux.

Hmm that would be interesting. I don't think it's possible, unless you have special drivers. I never even heard of internet on dos period (though it IS possible) but I'm sure there might be special drivers for it. I'm not sure how it would be done though. Would probably involve adding a few lines in config.sys and it would load the drivers for the network card and required modules for netbios. Something I should actually look into, if ever I have a disaster and dos is the only way, it would make backing up easy. Though I use ntfs so probably not... smile.gif

Thanks for your help red squirrel and windstalker, but could you tell me what i would have to do if i would be using the OS : xp home eddition, cause theres a little bit of a different control panel. Thanks again....lol

If you're using Windows XP, the same settings apply under it as under Windows 2000. If what's been posted doesn't help, you can always tell us and we'll try and find the answer. You know how to find me, anyway, Landre. Good Luck.

Not sure what OS you are using, but I think I remember how it is under win98 so I'll explain it under win98 and 2K...

Win98
Go to the control panel, choose network properties, go to install, then choose protocol in the list and choose NETBUI.

Win2K
Go to the control panel, choose network and dial-up connection, right click on local area connection (I think it says that for everyone, not sure) and you will get the same dialog as when you clicked network properties in win98, so the rest is the same.

I hope this helps. wink.gif
