Yeah let's hope firefox stays "empty" since that's how I like it, I can plugin the things I need.

I just hope it does not come shipped with an ad blocker, that will be evil and be a big impact on the advertising industry. Popup blocker, yes, but not adblocker.

Man, what's with all the disrespect? This is crazy you guys. I keep seeing the word moron and stuff.

Do you work for Mozilla? If they are going to start bundling things, they better still keep an empty one. I would rather just download what I want, than have to uninstall the stuff I don't want.

Let's all get along and dance. dancingbanada.gif ........ Except IE users... Go away. nonono.gif

And what's with all the unregisters? Weird.

I use specialized software for those applications. This used to be something I liked about Opera as well, but they have bloated somewhat over the years. Funny how they used to use it's small size as a selling point....

Actually, Opera was never just a browser or a specialized program in any way. It's always had e-mail and news, and older versions had IM too.

As for small size, yeah, it's still a smaller download than Firefox smile.gif

yeah... but opera has of late been following the microshaft way of producing bloat-ware.

Opera is actually following the same path as always. The download is smaller than Firefox too, despite having more features.

have you seen what firefox extensions can make?

Just received some spam...
The last paragraph makes me laugh a lot.
>All in all, I don't care if you use Mozilla or Opera. As long as you're not using IE cause it is teh sux0r. Seriously, it will make your penis smaller.

I've just imagined the spam letter:

Trash IE, as it is root of your problems!!
Use Mozilla, Opera, Camino, OmniWeb,... or even Lynx, if you are so pervesive smile.gif

I got a nice mailing list of about 900 addresses I can try that. em321.gif

J/K that would get me out of this industry pretty quick. laugh.gif

I paid for Opera, but have made the swith to Mozilla Firefox. I like to add any features that I need. I can add extensions and uninstall them easily. My computor is running faster now that the browser is not so bloated. Opera looks uninteresting, Mozilla looks terrific by comparison. The downloads are extremly fast and it loads 6 or 8 webpages very fast. The Bookmarks are easily viesed (top or sidebar) and the Sage newsreader is just what I needed in a small memory browser newsreader.. Adblocking,Google and "Zoom In-Out " are the other Mozilla FireFox extensions that I find useful.

I prefer the way Opera handles favorites/bookmarks.

BlackBart - Oct-03-2004 server time
I havent tried the Mozilla suite, but have been messing around with Firefox some, I still like Opera better, mainly because I like the keyboard shortcuts for Opera better, and they are configurable in Opera as well. And I agree on the start-up page, and I feel the tabbed browsing is implemented better in Opera as well. In Firefox's favor is the fact that it DOESNT have every feature in the world pre-installed, and are instead installed seperately as extensions. I dont need a mail/irc/news client, I use specialized software for those applications. This used to be something I liked about Opera as well, but they have bloated somewhat over the years. Funny how they used to use it's small size as a selling point.... ah well. My personal opinion is Firefox is currently like an old version of Opera.

what a dopey git you are

{Post completely revised by TAK. There’s no need for being so disrespectful.}

Firefox has all the features mentioned in the article and more.

I like Opera, but I like Mozilla and Firefox better. On the Mac, Firefox seems faster.

I am a bit frustrated that Opera can't even open a file that Dreamweaver passes it. Every time I have Dreamweaver tell Opera to display a web page I have under development, Opera gives me an error saying the file was not found. All the other browsers are able to open the DW file fine. In order to see if the page looks OK on Opera, I have to manually go to the desktop and drag the file from there to the Opera window. Seems like they could figure out this basic functionality.

What you've written suggests you know Opera much better than you know Mozilla.

For example, Mozilla (I'm talking here of the older Suite product, not Firefox) actually does have almost all the features you think it doesn't, including built-in session start options; built-in irc chat; built-in popup blocking; diy sidepanels; being available on pretty much anything; being relatively secure; and so on.

You may have been looking at the newer Mozilla Firefox. The official Firefox download is currently much more spartan. After downloading the base product you have to then separately select which extra features you want. Sometime in the 1.x life cycle there will be Firefox downloads that bundle in the most popular extra features.

Thanks for the article, Robin! It seems more like a general “why Opera is good” article instead of a “why Opera is better than Mozilla” one, but it is still really good. smile.gif

Mozilla does have IRC software (Chatzilla), but it’s really not user-friendly in my opinion. Mozilla has a pop-up blocker as well.

I could have sworn that you could load bookmarks in the sidebar easily, but I couldn’t find it! I guess I am mixing up Mozilla with Firefox. tongue.gif

As far as security goes, you can compare the Secunia reports of both Mozilla and Opera (lastest versions). Both are really good. In the past, Firefox and Mozilla users might have been presented with a naughty extension that could have done some damage if accepted, but since extensions can now only be installed from “trusted” sites by default, I doubt people will see those. smile.gif

Opera has better CSS2.1 support than Mozilla. smile.gif

Red Squirrel - Oct-02-2004 server time
Yeah true. Personally I like Mozilla better too. But only thing I don't like about Opera is the ads (takes up room for nothing) and the fact that gifs are choppy, or don't animate at all, or are sometimes too slow or too fast.

harbingerofdoom - Oct-02-2004 server time
yeah... but opera has of late been following the microshaft way of producing bloat-ware.
Currently Im using firefox, which starts up faster than opera and loads pages faster than either opera or IE. While its nice that you have your personal opinion in regards to the added features that Opera has built in, most people will find that they are generally features that they are not going to use 100% of the time. Sure, its nice to have those features bundled in if you use them frequently, but since I never use any of them (For every bundled feature such as chat & mail, I prefer to use a stand alone product because they are generally more configurable to my tastes).

Im not sayin Opera is bad.... but I would rather have fast than features, especially when we are talking about the internet.

Red Squirrel - Oct-02-2004 server time
There are several reasons why I think Opera is better than Mozilla. These reasons are probably all personal, but hey, I can't help that. First and foremost, I like that Opera comes with a lot more features...
